10/31/14: Day 242: Last Day

I started the morning by writing a good bye speech that I hope Samuel will read to the church this Sunday. The main thing that has to be done today is to get the legal papers signed to transfer ownerships of the cars. Thankfully, Carlos called and said that he could come up the mountain with the papers so that Della wouldn’t have to go down. When Carlos arrived, we all signed the papers and then went to get copies of them made. While we were out, I enjoyed some valuable alone time with Carlos and I was able to better articulate my good bye. Maritza was at the door when we came back to the house. I told her I was going to go to visit Shucutitan and would see her and her family again soon. Then mom and I went down to Ahuachapán to take Linda (Carlos’ wife) back home and to get some medicine for Della. When we got back, Della was feeling a little better so she decided she wanted to go out with us to for everyone to do last minute gift shopping. We stayed out for about an hour and Della way over did it. She was nearly in tears from the pain as she got back to the house. Thankfully, she was able to rest for the rest of the day but it was a long day for her. At 3:30, Mom and I went to Shucutitan to say more good byes. We were able to see several families but there were many more that we didn’t make it to. Just as it was about dark, I got a call from Ricardo asking to meet up with us so we left Shucutitan. Ricardo and his wife were there at the gas station. We said our final goodbyes and Ricardo pulled out his phone starting showing me all the photos he had taken at the hospital of Charlotte. He had a big smile on his face and was fighting back tears as he flipped each one. Then we went back to the house and little Carlos was there playing Blockus with Leanna. It was dark and we needed to finish our packing so I took Carlos back to his house. We managed to finish packing and get to bed by 10:00; I had been afraid that I was going to have stay up all night.

Goodbye to Edgardo's family

Final goodbye to Ricardo and his wife

Final goodbye to or teammate Carlos and his family
