October Report

As with every month here, there is more to write about than I can possibly express. Charlotte is continuing to grow and she is healthy over all; though she not nearly sleeping through the night yet. Della, on the other hand, has had more health troubles. Her infections have continued to grow and cause great pain. We knew it would be best if we could come back early for better medical treatment but I didn’t understand how we could get there. I went out and did studies with Samuel when Della was feeling well enough to spare me. Then Lucky helped me prepare a couple of short lessons in Spanish which I presented when I was out with Samuel. The studies went well and I was encouraged and thankful for the opportunity. Samuel is helping several new Christians through a book called Qué Dice La Biblia so I got my own copy of it and have nearly completed reading it.

On Thursday, the 13th, I experienced the largest earthquake I have ever been in. It lasted about four minutes and caused the doors to swing back and forth and the bed to slide.  Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad. About midway through the month, we had to take our teammate, Lucky, back to the airport. We submitted the request for Charlotte’s passport on our way and then had a goodbye lunch with Lucky. Lucky asked if I could take over leading her ministries of bread and coffee and public reading while she was gone. At the first bread and coffee, I had a minor fender bender but thankfully there was no damage.  Then at the public reading, I managed to read a bit. Thanks to Lucky for patiently teaching me to read Spanish.

But the most happened in the last week of the month. Mom, Della’s mom, Leanna, Christina, and Dan came to visit! Della’s infections continued to worsen and it was decided that she needed to travel back to the States with them for medical treatment. By this point, we had been wrestling with the decision of making our return permanent. Della has been unhealthy since mid-July and there has been another major issue that has led us to the conclusion that it would best to conclude our involvement with the Ataco congregation. When I spoke with our mission committee, who were planning a visit, they encouraged us to come back and get treatment. The week then became a scramble to get everything ready for our departure. We were able to get Charlotte’s passport a day early and get tickets on the same plane as our family. Della had to have an aspiration two days before the flight and it was just enough to make her travels bearable. I made rounds and said many tearful goodbyes; sadly Della was not able to join me. We had been hopeful for the opportunity to say goodbye to the church as a whole on our last Wednesday night but the church was split and we found that there will be no more Wednesday night service for a while.

When we arrived back in the States, we had no insurance and had a major medical issue. But praise be to God, we have been taken care of. We arrived in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday and had a doctor appointment on Monday. The doctor said that it was serious enough that it needed to be aspirated again right away and we needed to see the surgeon the next day. On Tuesday, the surgeon saw us and decided that Della needed to have surgery that day and he removed a pocket of bacteria that he said was the size of an orange. The surgeon believes that no further surgeries will be necessary. The costs were affordable and I am thankful to God for this and the support that we have received.

This is our final report.

In Christ,
Caleb, Della & Charlotte

10/31/14: Day 242: Last Day

I started the morning by writing a good bye speech that I hope Samuel will read to the church this Sunday. The main thing that has to be done today is to get the legal papers signed to transfer ownerships of the cars. Thankfully, Carlos called and said that he could come up the mountain with the papers so that Della wouldn’t have to go down. When Carlos arrived, we all signed the papers and then went to get copies of them made. While we were out, I enjoyed some valuable alone time with Carlos and I was able to better articulate my good bye. Maritza was at the door when we came back to the house. I told her I was going to go to visit Shucutitan and would see her and her family again soon. Then mom and I went down to Ahuachapán to take Linda (Carlos’ wife) back home and to get some medicine for Della. When we got back, Della was feeling a little better so she decided she wanted to go out with us to for everyone to do last minute gift shopping. We stayed out for about an hour and Della way over did it. She was nearly in tears from the pain as she got back to the house. Thankfully, she was able to rest for the rest of the day but it was a long day for her. At 3:30, Mom and I went to Shucutitan to say more good byes. We were able to see several families but there were many more that we didn’t make it to. Just as it was about dark, I got a call from Ricardo asking to meet up with us so we left Shucutitan. Ricardo and his wife were there at the gas station. We said our final goodbyes and Ricardo pulled out his phone starting showing me all the photos he had taken at the hospital of Charlotte. He had a big smile on his face and was fighting back tears as he flipped each one. Then we went back to the house and little Carlos was there playing Blockus with Leanna. It was dark and we needed to finish our packing so I took Carlos back to his house. We managed to finish packing and get to bed by 10:00; I had been afraid that I was going to have stay up all night.

10/30/14: Day 241: Such a Drain

I woke up at 4:00 AM and started getting ready. At 6:05, Dan, Christina, Mom, Leanna, and I left the house to go to the U.S. Embassy to get Charlotte’s passport. We arrived at the Embassy at 8:20 and I pulled over to the curb to jump out and mom took over the driving. It only took me about 5 minutes to get it and I waited outside for mom to return. The guards apparently didn’t like me waiting so close to the Embassy so they kept asking me to move. Mom came back about 15 minutes later with breakfast from Mc Donald’s in hand. Then we drove back to Candelaria de la Frontera to explore a bit more and give the rest of our family the opportunity to see it. Mom and dad may or may not end up working there... but mom wanted everyone to see it none the less. We arrived back home at 11:30. Della said that she was in pain and needed to go to the doctor right now, instead of waiting until tomorrow. So just Della and I got in the car and drove to Sonsonate for the doctor. We ended up waiting a good while to be seen. Then the doctor did an ultra sound and said that Della had around 20 CCs of pus that needed to be drained. The doctor explained that she could pop a needle in and do it quickly with no anesthesia or she could opt to have anesthesia and it would cost a bit more. Della said she wanted the anesthesia but then she waffled a bit because she was afraid it might have a chance of affecting baby Charlotte through the milk. She went ahead with it and they put her completely under for the procedure. I watched and I believe that she made the right decision without a doubt. About midway through the procedure the electricity cut out and they had to use a key ring flashlight for about five minutes! Sure enough they pulled out a good 18 CCs.  Della said that she read on the internet that in the States, if the surface area of the mastitis is more than three cm, it is standard to put a drain in and Della's was about 20 cm! We got home around 5:40 and I took Dan and Christina to get dinner and medicine for Della. The pharmacy didn’t have what we needed and the pizza took like 40 minutes to cook. It started up pouring rain when it was time to go and our visibility was near zero. Thankfully it was only a two minute drive but when we got back to the house some dude in a big truck had decided to ignore our sign and park right in front of the garage door! Leanna said that the pizza was the best she ever had. Then we took turns Skyping with our loved ones back home (including Lucky!). Afterwards, Leanna and I played a very intense game of Dr. Mario and I won!

10/29/14: Day 240: Tears

Because of Della and Charlotte’s ongoing medical issues, our return to the States will be permanent and this is what made the goodbyes so hard… Charlotte cried hard for four hours before she finally fell asleep last night. We called the U.S. Embassy and they said that Charlotte’s passport had arrived. So we bought return tickets and we managed to get on the same plane as everyone our families! At 10:30, Mom, Christina, Dan, Leanna, and I walked to the cemetery and then to the coffee house. Then the same crew went down to Ahuachapán to transfer the names on the cars. I saw Ricardo on the way and I was able say my good byes. He started crying and I couldn’t help but cry too. We arranged for him and his wife to meet us Friday while we are at the doctors. And Della is yet again, worse today than she was yesterday. We then continued on our way and met Carlos at the lawyer’s office. We found out that mom needed a special ID card to do the transfer of ownership of our car so we went and got one. Everyone waited at Ban Ban while mom managed to get the card. Then we walked to the internet office and we paid out the rest of the contract. Then we grabbed a few groceries and checked the pharmacy for the availability of mom’s medicine. We got back to the house at 2:30 and Osvaldo’s family came over at 3:30.Luz Elena gave us a going away gift and we all cried. Many words were said, prayers were said and we visited for a while. Then Mom, Leanna, and I went back down to Ahuachapán to visit Wendi, Paolo, Fernando, Eva, and Tanya. I gave Paolo Tikal and Della sent some scissors for Wendi. After Fernando prayed, I went around the room and told everyone how much I loved them. I told Paolo thank you for letting me beat him in Tikal so many times and we hugged and cried for a long time. Then Wendi insisted that we stay for dinner and it was delicious. She hand tossed Mom, Leanna and me a giant tortilla.  We ate until we were stuffed and then Della called and said we had some more guests on their way to our house. Everyone said they were going to come up and see Della Friday morning. We saw Edgardo on our way home and I said my good byes to him. César, Eliza and their baby Abigail were waiting for us when we got home. They ate spaghetti with us for dinner and then we Skyped with dad. They are all excited about the work that they will soon be starting.

10/28/14: Day 239: Scouting

Charlotte slept well last night but I was anxious about returning to the States. Dan helped me cook breakfast and we all ate together. Then at 9:45, mom and I went out to meet César and Eliza. They were there waiting on us when we arrived and we explained the situation to them as it now stands. Then we went to their house and met their new baby and family. Samuel was there too so I was able to have some valuable time talking to him. Then we went to a city called Candelaria de la Frontera. There was a good grocery store there and we stopped to talk with the police about security. There is a church there but it only has about 20 people that attend and there are about 22K living in the city. The church there also has no permeant preacher so that might be a good opportunity to work with them. Then we went back to Santa Ana and had lunch at the mall. After lunch we checked out two communities within Santa Ana. When we had finished scouting all the areas that we could we went back to César’s house to drop them off. There we discovered that mom had accidently picked up Della’s phone so that explained why Della hadn’t been answering my calls. Then I showed mom some buildings in Santa Ana that are critical for obtaining residency here. On our way home, we decided to take the scenic route through Los Naranjos. We arrived home about 4:30 and then had dinner as a big family. Then we got on Skype and reported our findings to Dad. The day ended by mom, Leanna, Christina and Dan on a team and I playing a couple of games of Blockus. I won the first and then Christina,s team won the second.

10/27/14: Day 238: Surprise!

Della didn’t sleep last night at all due to the pain in her chest. She called the doctor and she said Della needed to come in today. Della went with her mom at 12:30 to the doctor while the rest of us walked around Ataco to do a little more site seeing. We all walked up to the cross that overlooks the city. On our way back down, we met Bryan and he walked with us till he got to his school. Then we ate lunch near the park and then went back home. As we were walking in, I noticed that the door had not been properly locked, but thankfully no one had bothered anything. Della got back from the doctor around 4:30 and she said that she now has two abscesses. The infection is continuing to get out of hand. At this point we made the decision that it would be best to send Della back to the States with family that is visiting to receive treatment for this before even more drastic measures have to be taken. All day, I had been struggling and praying about a decision that I had to make. When I got on Skype, I found out the decision was now moot! It is amazing how God answered this prayer, not in the way that I asked, not in the way that I thought possible, but in a way that is absolutely best. So long story short… I am now able to go home with Della to help her in getting medical care instead of having to wait here. We now have a lot of work to get done in just a few short days to get ready. We will be coming home on this Saturday!!!

10/26/14: Day 237: Ataco Church Plans

At service a plan was shared to stop renting the building and start meeting for Sunday mornings in Shucutitan and Sunday evenings in Ataco. The plan is to stop having Wednesday night meetings and this will all happen until a building is made on some piece of property somewhere in Ataco. Everyone was convinced that they had enough disposable income to contribute more in offerings to accomplish paying this off over the course of some number of years. Once they were convinced, pieces of paper were passed around and each family had to write their name on it and make a commitment to an amount. After service we went back to the house where Della had stayed with her mom. Lunch needed to cook for two more hours so we all decided to walk around town and shop for souvenirs. Little Carlos met us at one of the shops and stayed with us the entire time. Leanna had gotten to know Little Carlos on a mission trip and it was great for them to meet again. Then we went back to the house and ate lunch. After lunch we rested for 30 minutes and then went to the afternoon service. Then we all ate pupusas for dinner. This was the first time for Christina, Dan and Brenda to ever have one. Then I got on Skype for most of the rest of the evening. Della’s health is not doing well and we are trying to determine what the best course of action is for this, and some other stuff…

10/25/14: Day 236: Arrival

Samuel had my keys to the church building and I needed them back for the bread and coffee ministry. I called him and he came to meet me at the church building. When Carlos got there he told me that the contract for the current building that the church is in has expired so they are scrambling to figure out what to do about it. It is difficult to find a suitable place here in Ataco. We had plenty of help show up and we finished around 9:30. Then I went back home and took care of Charlotte while Della rested until 5:30. Then I went to the grocery to meet Osvaldo. I did some last minute grocery shopping and then as I was on my way to the car, some dude kept pestering me so I left before I was able to meet Osvaldo. I called him and told him I would just see him at the airport. As I was pulling into the airport, Osvaldo called me and said that he had had some car trouble but thankfully he was with Noé and they would be there soon. Their timing ended up being pretty much perfect for arriving as mom and everyone came through the immigration. It is hard to believe that this day has finally arrived! We greeted everyone then we went to Wendy’s for dinner. We ended up getting home at 11:30 and staying up till 1:00. They brought some wonderful gifts for Charlotte. Della’s mom was the first to hold Charlotte and my mom was the last. I am sure this week will be gone by in the blink of an eye but I am going to do my best to make the most of it!

10/24/14: Day 235: Anticipation

Della’s medicines kicked in today and they made her sleepy. So I stayed home and took care of Charlotte for the day. Charlotte was nice and happy today…. She is just waiting for everyone to get here.
