9/12/14: Day 194: Charlotte!!!

Della managed to sleep in until 9:30. Lucky cooked breakfast for her and I went and got her a watermelon. Then Lucky and I went to Ahuachapán to get groceries. Then we got some food and ate lunch before coming back home so Della would not have to watch us eat. Della is not allowed to have any food from now until tomorrow morning. We got back to Ataco at 12:30 and we left for the doctor at 1:30. Our first stop was the clinic for blood work and then on to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital at 3:00 and Ricardo and Yoli (his wife) were there waiting on us. They put Della in a wheel chair and rolled her the 50 feet to her room. The hospital is nice and not crowded at all. There is only enough room for five patients at a time. We had a nice air conditioned room and we mostly just waited for time to pass. At 5:00 on the dot the doctor arrived and took Della back to get prepped. She said she would come back and get me soon. I got so anxious I nearly went crazy waiting because the prep took nearly 20 minutes. She came and got me and I changed into scrubs, put a hair net, mask, and slippers on as fast as I could. Then I waited another 5 minutes. I just knew they must have started the surgery without me. But finally they came to get me and they were just putting the blankets on when I came in the operation room. I didn’t know anything much about C-Sections but I do now. I am not going to go in to gory detail but it was a lot rougher than I thought it would be. I could hear Della talking with the anesthesiologist during the entire operation. At 5:50 PM little Charlotte was pulled out butt first. She was amazingly purple and my eyes were glued to her as two nurses took her aside to tend to her. There was an anesthesiologist, a gynecologist (the lead), a pediatrician, and three nurses. I don’t think I blinked a single time but I did grimace several times. As they were taking Charlotte to the table she cried and so did Della and I. Charlotte’s color came quickly and within 5 minutes of checking her vitals they handed her to me. I held her for a moment and then they took her back to work on her a bit more. Then I went into the recovery room with Charlotte and took pictures while Della was being stitched up. Again, it seemed like forever waiting for Della. When they brought her in she was going in and out of consciousness. She would wake up and say some nonsense and then her eyes would roll up and go into REM. The doctor assured me that everything was normal and that the entire operation couldn’t have gone any better. At this point I started making phone calls and the doctors went to get dinner. I didn’t leave Charlotte and Della’s side for the rest of the night. We were finally rolled up to our room around 8:00. Lucky, Ricardo and Yoli went to get dinner and brought me back a bacon and egg biscuit about 9:40. Della had to lay flat on her back all night so she didn’t get to hold Charlotte today. About 11:30 the nurses said we looked exhausted so they took her for us to have some rest.

  2. Caleb and Della,
Congratulations on the new addition. I know that you will be awesome Christian parents and teach her to know her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks for being such incredible Christian examples and for your demonstration of your Christian faith.
