At 12:30 AM the nurses came in and said they were concerned
that Charlotte has not eaten yet. They said they thought there might be some
amniotic fluid in her throat and they were going to put a scope in to see.
Della and I were both a bit worried so we prayed about it but then we fell
asleep. We woke up about 4:45 AM and I decided I was going to go find out what
was happening. I found her asleep behind the nurses’ station resting
peacefully. They told me that her blood sugar was good and that she had eaten
during the night. So I carried her back to our room and Della was relieved. I
held Charlotte until 8:30 when the nurses came in and tried to feed her again
but she didn’t show much interest. At 9:00 our OBGYN came in and told Della she
could sit up and try to nurse. She also told Della that things were going so
well that we could go home today at 5:30 instead of tomorrow. Then Della was
brought a light breakfast and Ricardo brought me breakfast. At 9:30, they took
Charlotte for her first bath. Charlotte had been very quiet until this point
but she loudly protested the bath. Her bath lasted nearly 30 minutes and it exhausted
her. By this point Della was feeling well enough that she was able to get up
and walk to the restroom but with a lot of pain. Throughout the day the nurses refreshed the
bottle but Charlotte would not wake up; she slept until 4:30 PM! Ricardo
brought me some amazing hoagies for lunch. The nurses got worried that
Charlotte had not eaten all day and had not tried to nurse. So they threatened
that they might need give Charlotte an I.V.. Thankfully, when she woke up at
4:30 she did try to nurse and drank some from the bottle. Then I changed my
first diaper. It was a mess, even got poo on her feet and she peed on me while
I was changing her. The doctor arrived at 5:00 and said that she still felt
comfortable discharging Della. Lucky brought the car and Ricardo and Yoli came
to see us off. The nurses gave Della a final round of pain meds and then we
started the trip home. Sonsonate is normally about a 40 minute drive but I went
slowly so the bumps wouldn’t be as bad for Della and it took 1.5 hours. We were
all worn out and tried to go to bed. But, Charlotte had slept all day… After a
few rounds of nursing, burping, diaper changing, and bottle feeding she finally
went to sleep again at 3:30. Lucky even came in to check on her around 2:00.
