8/11/14: Day 162: Waterfalls

I think I slept better than anyone else. Most got themselves and their belongings soaked last night. They setup clotheslines and hung everything out. I woke up at 5:30 so I read Ezequiel until breakfast time at 7:00. Then we all left camp to walk to some waterfalls nearby. We were told that the hike would last around 30 minutes but it was more like 1.5 hours. All the girls walked out in front and the trail was steep and muddy. So I spent much of the time standing still, waiting to move an inch forward every 5 minutes. I felt that the hike was pretty tough so I know that it was the max for many others. The falls were beautiful and loud. We played around them for a good while and then went back to the camp. The hike back out was the hard part because it was a steep climb back up; some almost didn’t make it. About halfway back we came to a clearing so we stopped to rest while one of the Gainesvillians gave a lecture. When I got back to the camp I got some ice cream from a street vender and then climbed into my hammock. I intended to just sit there for a few minutes while I waited for lunch to arrive but I fell asleep for twenty minutes and had to eat a late lunch. After lunch we divided back into our groups and discussed the questions that were asked on the hike lesson. We had two in our groups that are not Christian that are defiantly struggling so I asked if Carlos could join us for all team discussions after this. Then we played three games in the field. For the first, we had to walk from cone to cone and at each we were told that more and more members of our group had imaginary injuries such as blindness and missing legs. The second game involved making a circle and randomly joining hands with someone across to make a giant knot; the goal was to untangle without letting go. The last game was not a team game. For this game a person closed their eyes, counted to ten and then randomly called out a number. If you happened to be at the cone that corresponded to the number you were out and if you were not at a cone you were out. I said I won this game because they played two rounds of it and I was among the first out both times. Everyone was super tired so thankfully we got a three hour break till dinner. I managed a 20 minute conversation completely in Spanish with Franklin!! It was super rough and required a lot of patience on his behalf but I am very thankful. Franklin is a computer engineer who lives in Ahuachapán that I met on my first visit to El Salvador, four years ago. Then I went down to the site where they were going to have a campfire and was told that the s’mores were forgotten. I was disappointed but somehow I found the strength to go on. Samuel led the evening devotional and I was thankful that we had Carlos to help with the discussion questions. Two ladies from other groups announced that they wanted to be baptized! We didn’t have access to a baptistery and we are going to the beach first thing tomorrow so we decided to wait till then. Then most of the campers went to the fire but I knew it was about to rain so I went to the hammock.

Fun at the falls
