I arrived at Hector’s house at 7:00 to take one of the Gainesvillians to meet
Hector’s mom in Sonsonate. One from the group had to arrive a day late so
Hector’s mom went on to the airport to get her and I went back to Ataco to join
everyone else in the church. The sermon was by a Gainesvillian named Westin who
is a firefighter with lots of good stories. At 11:30 Lucky, Della, and I met
the owner at a house to consider it for rent. It had a big backyard but nothing
going for it other than that except for the beautiful spider (See picture) that
Lucky said would have to go. I went back home and packed and at 1:00 I got on
the bus and left for the camp. It was about an hour drive to a gated park that
was well kept with plants and such. We had 60 teens and half of them were not
Christians. We started the camp by dividing in to random teams evenly split
boys and girls. For my group, I had; two members from Gainesville, one from
Shucutitan that was with the Ataco church and one that was not, Ava (Wendi’s
niece), and more, about ten people in total. Our first game was to memorize the
names, ages, and favorite pet and then get quizzed. Thankfully I didn’t miss
any but somehow we didn’t win. After
that we had to select 5 members of our group to make a human statue. They came
up with the idea to pose as a bicycle. Then we were given materials and went to
make a flag. Our team color was yellow so we chose to go with Revelation 5:5,
the Lion of Judah. Then everyone setup camp and I got the perfect spot for my
hammock, under a porch roof between two pillars with hooks intended for
hammocks. I knew it was going to rain so I was very happy with this spot. We
ate dinner at 6:00 and then had a bible study. The lecture posed three
questions that we divided into our teams to answer amongst ourselves. I know a
little Spanish now and Ava knows a little English so between us we had to make
do for the interpretation. This was a huge stretch for my Spanish skills. After
we finished everyone went back to the field to play a game called Dragon. In this game each team linked
arms and one had a ribbon attached while the other end held a flashlight. The
rules were that the only the head of a dragon could take the tail off another
and the goal was to be the last with a tail. Our dragon kept breaking apart but
we played till we were exhausted. I got to bed at 9:30. It poured rain and
people talked all night.
