3/8/14: Day 6: Church moving day

Woke up at 5:30, we are still getting used to the mattress. I took a shower and ate cereal. Then I messed with the stove until 8:00, still no luck getting it to work. At 8:00 Edgardo and his family came over to start moving everything out of our house that belonged to the church. We asked Edgardo about the why the stove was not working and finally determined that the gas tank was delivered empty. So Javier took me to swap the tank with a full one. After that we went back to the house and helped move a bunch of stuff to the new building. Della tried to make coffee for everyone but she made it weak and that made her sad. Della sent Lucky and me off to get some mugs. I got 4 mugs and some spaghetti. Then we walked to another store to get chairs since the chairs we had been using belonged to the church. I bought four chairs and a table and carried them back to the house. When we unboxed the table it had the logo “Cerveza Tona Nicaragua” on it in four places; Cerveza is Spanish for beer. I then hooked up the washing machine but I couldn’t get it to start so Lucky called the store and tried to get them to come out and take a look at it. Della tried to cook with the new $2 pot but it melted and she tried again with our big pot and it burned really bad. The new stove is super hot. We had burnt grilled cheese for lunch. Then we walked over to the new building and worked there cleaning and setting up. Della got really tired and went back home to take a nap. While I was working at the new building Hector couldn’t find a few things so he sent me back to my house with four kids to check the closets. We all quietly snuck in so as to not wake Della but we couldn’t find anything Hector needed. I went back to the new building and climbed a 10 foot ladder and hung the new church sign while 3 other guys held the ladder. It was pretty dangerous because there was a live power wire running and I was probably 15 feet in the air (the ladder was on the edge of the porch). I should probably get health and life insurance soon. Then I went back and took a 15 minute nap while Carlos went to get some stuff to hook up the projector. Hector called me when Carlos got back and I went over and set up the projectors. Then I went back to the house and studied Spanish. At 3:20 I managed to figure out that the button had to be mashed pretty hard for the washer to start working. Hector then brought over a giant cake for tomorrow hoping it would fit in our refrigerator but it didn’t. So we got four plates and filled them with water and put the table on top of them and put the cake on top to protect it from the ants.  At 3:30 Della and I walked across Ataco to a small house that had no roof and had a study with about 25 adults + children. After the study they served hot tamales to everyone. I felt super bad for eating the food in a house that didn’t even have a roof. After the lesson, Edgardo’s son Javier tried to teach me some Spanish and I asked if he went to the school in the afternoon or morning and he said he was taking the year off. His mom was sitting next to us and we asked her about it and she tactfully said that they couldn’t afford to pay for the bus and uniform this year. Then I carried 12 plastic chairs across Ataco back to the new building, I thought I was not going to make it due to the weight and distance. Then I went back to our house got the keys to the church so them all in to put up the chairs. Our house is three blocks from the new building. On the way back to the house I met Manuel and he said he should be able to bring us some honey and take me to the bee farm tomorrow! Della had to help a little with the translation, but I understood what he was saying though I couldn’t properly respond. Then Della and I went to the hardware store to buy a part needed to get the washer to drain properly but it was already closed. I hooked up the washer with the drain zip-tied to the back of a plastic chair sitting in the fountain with a bag around it to keep it from splashing. Yay, we just completed our first load of laundry.
