3/4/14: Day 2: Shopping

We woke up at 6:15, I got a really good night of sleep. Della said she didn’t sleep as well, she couldn’t believe the dog fight outside the window didn’t wake me up. Hector cooked eggs and beans at Della’s request for breakfast. We ended up running a little late for the meeting. We arrived for the meeting at 8:10 and Noé was there! Della told him we were expecting and he congratulated us. The meeting attendees were Hector, Della, Noé, Carlos, Lucky, and Osvaldo. The meeting lasted until 10:30 ish. It seems everything has changed for the mission trip for Central this summer.

After the meeting finally ended we got to go shopping in Ahuachapán. We (Della, Hector, Lucky, and I) got in the car and drove a few blocks to the first store. They gave us a quote but this included a queen size mattress. While we were waiting for the printout of the quote a street vendor brought in some snacks and I bought a two pack of a chocolate thing and Hector got a pastry thing. At the next store, next door, they gave us a much better quote but at this point Della decided to compromise and have a Full size bed instead of a queen. Lucky talked them into also throwing in an iron. Della wanted to go with this quote but I wanted to at least check with three stores before making a final decision. We walked to the third store and they quoted us a price that was very close, but no iron and a lessor quality mattress and washer. We talked with the second place on the phone and managed to get them down a few more dollars. We then went back to the second store and waited for them to finalize everything. After waiting a while they told us we would have to come back at 2:30 when the manager was back. So we went to lunch while Hector went out to buy sim cards and prepaid phone cards for us. For lunch we ate Pollo Campero again. Lunch lasted from 2:00 till 3:00. I had fried chicken and fries and Della had a chicken sandwich and I got a flan for desert. The waiter was so appreciative about the tip that he gave us an extra bottle of water. We then went to a store to buy sheets and while we were waiting Hector got a call from the second store saying that it would cost more, that they couldn’t make the price because of the manager. So Hector said to forget the sheets because it was now too late in the day to get a delivery so we went to the third store again. As they were trying to write up everything I decided that the second store was a better deal because for a little more we would be getting a better mattress, better washer, pillows, an iron, and a fan. So we went back for the second store for the third time and finally closed the deal. Lucky said we had to treat her to a bean pizza next time we went to Pollo Campero for her talking them into throwing in the iron. They told us they would deliver everything at 6:30 today but we had to have a bible study at Hectors at 5:30 so we told them to have it delivered tomorrow at 9:30 AM. We then rushed back to Hectors house and arrived there at 5:15. I counted about 25 adults at the bible study and it lasted until 6:55. I didn’t understand much because of not knowing Spanish but Hector read out of Acts 4:31. After the devotional Hector served everyone cokes, coffee and cookies with sweet bread.

Today we bought:
Microwave
Refrigerator
Pillows
Washer
Stove / Oven combo
Propane tank attachment
Fan
Iron
Full size mattresses

One more night in Hector’s house. The Cortez has treated us as family. Tonight I got my first shower, it was nice and hot! The little local water heater works really well! Della cooked a grilled cheese for herself but it burnt so I ate it and she cooked another for herself for dinner.
