3/6/14: Day 4: Cleaning

We didn’t get much sleep last night because it was super cold due to not having a blanket. We thought the box of sheets we bought included a blanket. The noise wasn’t too bad, but several times someone would drive by honking their horn to wake up the entire neighborhood. I got out of bed at 6:30 and ate something that looked like coco puffs and then started cleaning the very dirty shower. I worked on the shower for two hours while Della caught up on sleep since it was warmer. I took a shower and the water was nice and hot. Della got up about 9:00 and we worked on unpacking until 11:00 when stopped for lunch. We ate sandwiches using bread that a lady had gifted to us last night during church meeting at our house. Then we went walking around in Ataco. At the first store we bought light bulbs, gloves, beans, and other stuff. Then we went to the store where I bought our clothes last summer. We bought a computer desk, trashcans, power strip, buckets, and blankets and other stuff. I had to make two trips, one to carry the computer desk and another to carry everything else. We then went back out and bought a broom and a pot. When we got back to the house I worked on the stove and waited for Manuel to take me to the bee farm. He never showed up, later when I saw him near his house he said he had had to work all day instead of getting off early like he thought he would and we would try again soon. Rachael arrived with Carlos at 3:00 to go to the school in Ataco to meet the director and two American girls who had been teaching English there. The meeting was to discuss the consideration of taking on some of the ESL teaching they were doing because they were leaving at the end of April. They said they were teaching a total of 37 hours a week and that the kids were very respectful and fun to teach there. After talking with them the director showed us the computer room. There were about twenty P4 desktop computers. I asked what classes were being taught there and he said Excel, Powerpoint, Word, and basic usage. I ask him if he was interested in having me teach Programming classes, networks and the like when I knew Spanish soon and he said he was very much so! This is going to be a great opportunity to meet the local teens and work to build up the youth group. We then went back to the house to grab a few things and headed up to Hector’s house. There we ate dinner and I showed Hector GraphViz and how it could be used to make an organization chart. Then we walked to a bible study at Edgardo’s house. The study started at 5:00 and lasted until 6:30. Hector had everyone introduce themselves, there were 12 adults. At the end of the study he tried to get me to call out everyone’s name but I could only get three of them. Then we walked back to Hector’s house and he gave me the keys to drive the car back home and told me to be there to pick him tomorrow at 7:30 for our trip to San Salvador to get our papers translated for the visas. He said if I get pulled over and taken to jail that that was too bad, he couldn’t do anything about it because I had his car. Luckily we had no trouble. I am going to try to hook up the security system and then study Spanish until time for bed.

P.S. I discovered that the T.V. did not make the transport.

Apparently peanut butter is hard to find and expensive here, hopefully we can get some in San Salvador tomorrow.
